Thank You to our Food & Drink Sponsors!

The team at SWAPmaine is very grateful for the support we have received from local businesses and organizations. Without their help, we could not put on these swaps.  Thank you to the following sponsors who are providing food and beverages for our pre-swap event.  While our volunteers are sorting your clothes for swapping, you can enjoy the following from:

13th Cookie

13th Cookie probably makes the best cookies in town. They are “committed to making the most delicious, delectable, palatable, ambrosial sweet joyness imaginable and making it available to everyone, despite desired or necessary dietary alterations.” And they do just that! 13th Cookie is providing us samples of their many delicious offerings for the  pre-swap event.

You can find 13th Cookie at a number of locations in Maine, including Mornings in Paris, Home Grown Tea and Lois’ Natural Market.13th COOKIE kitchen.

Coffee By Design has been kind enough to provide coffee for our pre-swap event. Their mission is to ” educate you about specialty coffee; to provide you with superior quality coffee beans, beverages, and food products; and to fulfill our commitment to environmental and economic sustainability.” On top of that, CBD is a frequent contributor and sponsor of many local events and organizations. They are a terrific community partner – and roast outstanding coffee, to boot!

Katie Made Bakery

Get ready! Katie Made has generously donated muffins for our pre-swap event. Tucked away on Cumberland Avenue, Katie’s bakery is gem. They make desserts for special events and area restaurants and now offer lunch Tuesday-Saturday. We encourage you to stop by and try one of their delicious “Jenny Made” sandwiches!

How To Get Into The Swap…FOR FREE

As if a bag of free clothes isn’t awesome enough, I’m about to share some secrets with you all. Why? Because I care.

Here are two surefire ways to get into SwapMaine for free. That’s right. Free.

1) Show up on Friday, October 28th (the night before the swap) between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to drop off your clothes. That’s it. It’s a one-hour window but you’ll get free admission the next morning. One hour only!

2) Show up on Saturday morning between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. with some baked goods. A pumpkin loaf perhaps? Or some mouth-watering brownies? Maybe a triple-layer devil’s food cake with the word SWAP stenciled on it with powdered sugar? Whatever your Betty Crocker skills can provide and your bag of clothes will get you in free that morning too.
bakedgoods
Just a reminder that those that show up with clothes the morning of the swap will be charged $5. Those that want to come and swap without a bag of clothes to bring will be charged just $10. And of course, all this money goes to Goodwill.

Baked goods, free clothes and charity? Pinch yourselves people.

So hard to say goodbye…

I have this secret closet cleaning ninja trick that I use to help me determine what needs to go. It’s called DON’T DO YOUR LAUNDRY FOR LIKE A MONTH. But it’s pretty secret, so try to keep it on the downlow.

Basically, I don’t do my laundry for like a month (I have a king’s ransom in socks and underwear), and I evaluate what is left in my closet at the end of the period. And you know what? My closet is still ALWAYS FULL. As it turns out, I would rather wear a few marginally clean items that I love, than the majority of what I own.

But then comes the tricky part.

When I look in my closet, I see possibilities: “I can wear that again when I lose 10 lbs.”  or  “Maybe I just need to find the right top for that skirt.”  Even though I haven’t worn these clothes in months, I have such a hard time getting rid of them, because I can imagine how amazing my life could be if I could just figure out how to make them look good on me. I’ve had these clothes for so long that I’ve grown emotionally attached to them, even though they don’t fit me/look good/work with my wardrobe AT ALL. In short, my overzealous wardrobe optimism is becoming dangerously detrimental to my closet space.

Well, the swap is less than 2 weeks away, and it’s time to force myself to let go.  It will be painful. Blood and tears could potentially be shed… But, it’s necessary for my personal growth. Oh, and to make room for all my new swap swag.  Here is what you can get out of it:

1. The hot pink hooker heels that I wore to my ill fated wedding in 2007.

2. A puffy floral skirt that will never be work appropriate, no matter how much I want it to be.

3. Why do I keep buying peasant blouses and dresses?

4. More Rogues Gallery stuff that I never wear. I worked there 4 years ago, I was never a T-shirt person anyway. It’s over.

5. The polka dot cha-cha skirt that only looks good on me when I don’t eat for 3 days.

6. “My neck is too fat for these” necklace assortment.

7. “It’s been 3 years and 30 lbs, and the skinny clothes box is still untouched. Maybe it’s time to get rid of the whole damn thing” bundle.

Awesome Things I’m Giving Away at the Swap

With the swap coming up fast and furious (October 29 – here we come!) I’ve started going through my clothes. This time around I’ve decided to be brutal. If I haven’t worn in it in two years and it doesn’t fit, it goes. I’ve already got a nice little pile going, ready to be added to the bins and racks at the swap. That being said, there’s nothing wrong with anything I’m donating to the swap. It’s all great stuff, just not for me.

Here are a few prime examples of my stuff that will be at the swap on 10.29 (clockwise from top left).

Black wedges: These are awesome… and free (got them at the last swap). They are also too small for me. They pinch my size 9′s way too much to be worth it. So, size 8 foot ladies – these are for you!

Black peasant dress: This dress is super cute, I actually really love it. I wore it once to a luau in Hawaii (true story). However, it really isn’t my style, a little too boho for me. Hippie chic girls – have at it.

Black American Apparel mini skirt: I am in my mid (almost late) 20′s and this thing is illegally short on my already very long legs. Since I’m not a fan of dressing like a desperate old woman, this thing has to go. Short girls / teens – this is all yours.

Sparkly bow shirt: I love a sequin, I really do, but this top is a little too cutesy for my style. If you can rock a bow like no other (you know who you are), I would happily hand this over to you.

Vintage polka dot skirt: I bought this at Goodwill without trying it on. Bad idea – too small. How I wish it fit, but alas, no. If you have a tiny waist, please give this skirt a good home.

Vintage pink skirt: Another Goodwill find that I didn’t bother to try on. I LOVE THIS SKIRT. So pink, so mini, so awesome. But, so small. If you’re a little, pink loving lady I hope you’ll pick this up.

So, I urge you to do what I did. Really clean out your closets, get rid of what you don’t wear and make some room for all the goodies you’ll pick up on October 29. But, do me a favor. No smelly, pilly, stained clothes. Just the good stuff, pretty please.

The Countdown Has Begun!

In just one month, SWAPmaine is back! October 29th, 10am – 3pm, to be exact! This time around it is going to be bigger and better! The idea of swapping is the same, but if you swapped with us in May, you will notice a few changes:

1. We have a new location! We were so thankful to Head Games for donating their space to us in May, but the huge turnout last time means a bigger space this time. That brings us to East End School (195 North Street, Portland). Just think of a spacious gymnasium where you can stroll the racks & bins and spend time picking out the perfect finds!

2. NEW! Bring your donations the day of the swap between 10 am and noon. We will also have ONE drop-off time prior to the event. You can bring you swap items to the East End School on Friday, October 28 between 5-6pm. If you come at this time, you will get free admission and one raffle ticket.

3. NEW – Pre-Swap Fun! Join us between 10 am and noon on the day of the swap (October 29) to drop off your clothes. Our great crew of volunteers will be sorting your swap items while you can relax with fellow swappers and enjoy free coffee and treats from your favorite local vendors. We like to think of this as the party before the party!

Mingle with fellow swappers, compare your plan of attack and get fueled up for an afternoon of swapping! When you bring your donations during this time, you will get half off the admission price( only $5) and one raffle ticket. Feel free to just stop by the Pre-Swap for a quick treat or stay the whole time!

4. The actual swap time will be a little shorter. Swapping will take place between 12-3pm. It may only be 3 hours this time, but the swapping itself will be more relaxed. Feel free to stay the whole time or come any time between 12-3pm. If you show up at 12pm or after, it will be $10 to enter (with clothes. Just remember, bags fill up fast, so come early (Pre-Swap, maybe?) to get the pieces you want!

5. You may have noticed the word raffle has been mentioned a few times. That is right! We will be raffling off 10 fabulous items donated to us from local business. If you drop off the night before or at the Pre-Swap, you will get one free raffle ticket. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased for $1 each.

6. We are looking for volunteers for this swap. If you are interested, please email us at swapmaine@gmail.com. We will offer you free admission to thank you for your time. We still ask that you donate to the swap, so we can be sure to help Goodwill as much as possible.

And of course, a few things are the same:

- Awesome Swag bags!

- Photobooth!

- A day of fun!

- Proceeds go to support Goodwill and all the wonderful things they do!

Happy Swapping!

wow.

Seriously, there is an insane amount of gorgeous stuff in this room. There are tons of clothes from Portland’s most stylish people and businesses. There are adorable dresses with the tags still attached,  shoes still in boxes, well-loved vintage suits, and designer jeans. Swappers dropped off perfect party skirts, worn-in band t-shirts, chunky beaded necklaces, and sparkly cocktail rings.

The people of Portland brought the weird, too: there are a few choice jumpsuits, sheer gold lame stirrup pants (I wish I hid those), a Chumbawamba crop-top, gigantic earrings, and super-tall platform boots. I think I spotted a few Halloween costumes.

The swag bags each have a generous amount of coupons and samples from local shops, spas, salons, and studios, but still have plenty of room to fill with clothes. I am so excited for the swap tomorrow, and I’m grateful to all the businesses and clothes-hoarders who helped make this swap amazing.
